Or, to put it another way, through what lens?

The same world appears different. Seen differently, interpreted differently, imagined differently. Even with the same eyes, we have a different perspective and a different focus. And, based on our background, we also interpret what we see and experience differently. We then capture that in our own image, story or representation.

There are multiple interpretations between the world and an individual’s representation of it, multiple choices regarding relevance, wording and imagination. What we see and how we represent it to others is coloured by our upbringing, knowledge and experience. By the social group to which we belong, by our political preferences, by our education and knowledge. But also by the situation we find ourselves in at that moment, by the location, the direction in which we are looking and which part we are observing.

Do you zoom in on details, or do you look at the whole picture? What boundary do you choose? What is important to you? What knowledge do you bring to bear? How do you organise your information? Which models are you familiar with?

Every representation of reality is coloured. It is a snapshot of a particular time and context as seen by a particular person or group. Articles, ideas, theories and models have a colour – and sometimes several colours – which are not always recognised in the process of communication. And this presents a challenge in communication between different perspectives, social groups, disciplines, or even between individuals within the same bubble.

But this also explains why we want to work in multidisciplinary teams, involve a variety of people in co-design sessions, and recognise the value of different perspectives and interpretations. Because what do you know that I don’t? What do you see that I don’t?

Dezelfde wereld is anders.

Original Dutch text below

This blog was originally written in Dutch.

How do you see the world?
