It’s a well-known exercise from LEGO Serious Play, designed to showcase the different interpretations and visualisations of a duck.

We emphasise the importance in product design of creating models as quickly as possible – whether made from cardboard and tape, LEGO or K’nex. How often do we find that what we had in mind as a product or function simply doesn’t work in the specific context of use? ‘I’m one hand short,’ was the comment from a nurse on a K’nex model that demonstrated how a product worked.

The ‘duck’ challenge shows that a familiar example (a duck) and just 6 LEGO bricks do not result in the same LEGO ducks. Not even just a few variations. How many different ducks can you see in the photo?

Naturally, this isn’t just about ducklings or products. It’s about the enormous variety of ways to describe the same thing, as well as the enormous variety of images we visualise in our head when we want to communicate something. The closer we get to reality (from words, to images, to concrete representations), the more we gain a shared image and understanding of what we’re talking about. Words remain abstract, images… …you know the saying.

This is a simple example of the difference in perspective and in how we communicate the same thing. There isn’t just one duckling.

Every year, we ask our minor students to build a LEGO duckling.
